Reset Your Mindfulness Practice: 3 Simple Steps

Reset Your Mindfulness Practice: 3 Simple Steps

There are many ways to approach Mindfulness. Since Jon Kabat-Zinn (listen to his definition of Mindfulness in this 5 minute YouTube Video), began to bring the ideas of Mindfulness from the East to the West in the late 1970s, we have learned a lot.

Mindfulness, as you may already know, is the practice of becoming centered in this present moment. We learn to focus on non-judgmental acceptance of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations that continually arise within our awareness from moment to moment. We often practice mindfulness through meditation and yoga, although there are other ways that research is showing us now.

Research about Mindfulness

We have done a ton of research about the benefits of Mindfulness. There is evidence in neuroscience that mindfulness practice can alter the brain’s structure and function. As well, Mindfulness has been found to have a positive impact on emotion regulation, how we remember, the way we respond to stress, how we learn and more.

Mindfulness Teachers

No wonder there are so many people practicing and teaching Mindfulness! We have trained a lot of teachers in Mindfulness, including me (I studied with the fabulous and feisty Dr. Patricia Rockman and the gentle and focused Gwen Morgan at the Centre for Mindfulness Studies.) I had already practiced Mindfulness for 20 years, then mentored with Gwen for almost five years and have taught over 100 people to build their Mindfulness practice.

Aspiration

I love Mindfulness. I find it an aspiring focus of my day to day life to bring a conscious awareness to what is happening here and now in my body, thoughts and feelings. It is hard sometimes! And I lose consciousness and awareness often…but it has helped me so much that I continue to practice and teach it, after more than 25 years.

3 Simple Steps

Over years of practicing, studying and teaching I have synthesized three simple steps to allow us to reset our practice. I need to continually practice these myself. This simple, 3-step framework has helped 100+ clients to reconnect to their core and rediscover their natural calm.

      1. Use deep breathing practices as often as you can
      2. Return to the present moment using your body as a focus
      3. Practice deeper self-compassion
